Ingredients

1 lb elbow macaroni

4 tablespoons unsalted butter

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

3 cups whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon onion powder

1/2 teaspoon mustard powder (optional)

3 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded (divided)

1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded

1/2 cup parmesan cheese, grated

Optional: 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs for topping


Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cook elbow macaroni in salted water until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour to make a roux.
  4. Gradually whisk in milk and heavy cream until smooth and thickened.
  5. Add seasonings: salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and mustard powder.
  6. Stir in 2 cups cheddar, mozzarella, and parmesan until melted.
  7. Combine cheese sauce with cooked pasta.
  8. Pour into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Top with remaining cheddar and breadcrumbs.
  9. Bake uncovered for 20-25 minutes until bubbly and golden.
  10. Cool slightly before serving.
