This Delicious Chocolate Buttermilk Cake is the kind of dessert that makes everyone reach for a second slice. With its moist chocolate cake layers, rich creamy frosting, and soft bakery-style crumb, it is perfect for birthdays, holidays, family gatherings, or anytime you need an easy recipe that feels extra special. If you are looking for chocolate cake ideas, easy dessert recipes, homemade cake recipes, party desserts, food ideas, and simple baking recipes that truly deliver, this one checks every box.

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

2 cups granulated sugar

3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

2 teaspoons baking soda

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

2 large eggs

1 cup buttermilk

1/2 cup vegetable oil

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 cup hot coffee

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

3 1/2 cups powdered sugar

3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder for frosting

1/3 cup heavy cream

1 teaspoon vanilla extract for frosting

1/4 teaspoon salt for frosting

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease two 9-inch round cake pans. Line the bottoms with parchment paper.

2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

3. Add the eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Mix until combined.

4. Slowly pour in the hot coffee and stir until the batter is smooth. The batter will be thin.

5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans.

6. Bake for 28 to 32 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.

7. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn them out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

8. For the frosting, beat the softened butter until creamy.

9. Add the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, heavy cream, vanilla extract, and salt. Beat until smooth and fluffy.

10. Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread frosting over the top.

11. Add the second cake layer and frost the top and sides of the cake.

12. Slice and serve at room temperature.

Notes

Do not overbake the cake layers, because even a few extra minutes in the oven can dry out the crumb and take away that soft, moist texture that makes this cake so good.
