Ingredients
2 ⅓ cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar (optional)
½ cup unsalted butter, very cold and cubed
¾ cup buttermilk, very cold
1 egg (optional, for egg wash)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
- Add cold, cubed butter and cut it into the flour mixture using a pastry cutter or your fingers until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually pour in cold buttermilk, stirring gently until the dough comes together.
- Transfer dough onto a lightly floured surface and pat it into a rectangle. Fold in half and repeat this process 3–4 times to create flaky layers.
- Roll the dough to about 1-inch thickness and cut biscuits using a round cutter without twisting.
- Place biscuits on the baking sheet, slightly touching for better rise. Optionally, brush the tops with an egg wash for a golden finish.
- Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until golden brown and beautifully risen.
- Let cool slightly and serve warm with butter, honey, or your favorite toppings.
